ToggleWhy We’re Launching a Strictly Guard the Reserve Auction at Parts-Ring (Pty) Ltd – Because Fire Sales Destroy Value and We Refuse to Let That Happen
Hi everyone,
If you’ve ever had to clear aged, surplus, or new-old-stock (NOS) inventory, you already know the pain. It’s not just about moving boxes – it’s about the real financial damage that happens when reserves are ignored and stock is dumped at rock-bottom prices.
I’ve lived this nightmare from both sides.
Six months ago I tried two “easy” routes to sell my own professional audio gear:
- Facebook Marketplace – dodgy buyers, endless haggling, manipulation, lies, and rudeness. I shut it down after a week of pure time-wasting.
- A well-known traditional auction house – they had the buyer list, so I thought I was protected. Big mistake. I set clear reserve prices on paper… and they were completely ignored. Example: Two Alto TS412 speakers (2 years old, hardly used). I paid R20,000. A serious buyer on Marketplace was ready at R12,000 and I had flagged them at R14,000. On the secondary market they still sell for R15k–R16k. The auctioneers hammered them at R6,000. The rest of the gear went the same way. I walked away with less than a third of what the gear was worth.
That experience taught me one brutal truth: most platforms and auctioneers don’t protect the seller’s reserve – they just want to clear the lot. Buyers (or resellers) hustle to buy cheap and flip. The seller gets crushed.
Now multiply that pain by thousands of items and millions of rand.
I used to work at a very well known reputed computer hardware distribution company in South Africa. We had to move the better part of R900 million worth of aged stock just after Covid. Sales staff were still earning commission on items already being sold at a loss. Take 1,000 notebooks that originally carried a 9 % gross profit. When you’re forced to clear them at half the original cost just to get rid of them, the losses become catastrophic. That one clearance exercise nearly can take most companies out but for the solid approach Exco took in dealing with these losses. This is a case study for any economics or accounting professional, the damages caused by a pandemic.
This is why we built the OPiC Auction Module at Parts-Ring (Pty) Ltd – and why we are promoting it so hard.
Our Promise: The Reserve is Sacred. Full Stop.
At Online Parts International (OPiC) we do not run fire sales. Every single lot has a strictly guarded reserve price. If the reserve is not met when the timer hits zero → the item is not sold. Period.
This is not negotiable. It is how we protect you – the company or individual trying to clear aged stock – from the kind of devastating losses I’ve seen first-hand at a leading IT Distribution company and in my own auctions.
We don’t believe high-quality electronics, IT parts, automotive, or industrial stock should be devalued just to “move the lot”. We believe in fair market value for the seller while still giving genuine, vetted buyers a real opportunity to save.
How the OPiC Auction Philosophy Works – High Value, Low Friction
- We Guard the Reserve No exceptions. No “let’s just get it sold” attitude. Your minimum price is protected by the system and by our team.
- Manual Vetting – No Hoodlums, No Bots Every bidder is reviewed by a real person before they can even see the auction pages. This keeps the environment professional and safe.
- Direct EFT Only – Zero Middleman Fees & No VAT We don’t use Stripe, PayPal, PayFast or any third-party gateway that charges 3–5 %.
- All payments are bank-to-bank (Direct EFT).
- Because Parts-Ring is not currently a VAT vendor on these auction listings, you save the full 15 % VAT compared with normal retail.
- Those savings are passed straight to buyers and sellers.
- Everything Sold “As-Is” (Voetstoots) but with full transparency You see clear photos, technical specs, and descriptions. Buyers know exactly what they are bidding on. No surprises.
Simple 5-Step Process (Designed to Be Friction-Free)
Before you start: Please read our LEGAL DOCUMENTS page (Terms & Conditions, POPI Act, Auction Rules).
- Register as a Bidder Complete the Bidder Registration form (you must be a subscriber first). Our team manually vets every application.
- Browse the OPiC Auction Dashboard All current aged-stock auctions are listed with specs, current bid, and countdown timer. This is new, so don’t expect much.
- Place Your Bid Enter your maximum bid. Remember: if the reserve is not met, the item stays with the seller.
- Win & Pay via Direct EFT You receive a Pro-Forma Invoice. Pay using the invoice number as reference. We manually confirm every payment. In most instances the buyer pays the seller directly and we send the seller an invoice. Rates to be determined.
- Receive Release Note & Collect/Dispatch Once cleared, we issue the Release Note. You arrange collection or delivery according to the auction terms.
Who This Is For
- Companies with aged IT, electronics, automotive or industrial stock – If you’re sitting on surplus that’s tying up capital, costing storage, and being sold at a loss, this is your new channel.
- Buyers who want genuine savings on quality parts from a trusted, vetted marketplace.
We are not another high-volume, race-to-the-bottom platform. We are a specialised liquidation solution that puts the asset first and protects the seller’s value.
If you’re a decision-maker at an IT distributor, manufacturer, or any business carrying aged stock, I’d love to give you test lots to prove how well this works. Just reach out – no obligation.
The auction module is live. The reserve is guarded. The losses stop here.
