Part 3 – Real Case Histories: Reliability Lessons from Marine Radar to CRT TVs, Computers & Manufacturing Shifts

The Honest Technician – In Parts 1 and 2 we looked at why the hybrid technical-sales profile wins in complex fields and where to actually build those skills. Theory and training are important, but nothing beats learning from what actually happened on the ground.

Years ago I read a book on Operations Management whose case histories were incredible. They didn’t just list what went right or wrong — they showed the real human and technical decisions behind outcomes. As someone who served as an operations manager myself, I quickly realised that studying these real stories pre-empts disaster going forward. You spot patterns early, avoid repeating costly mistakes, and make better decisions under pressure.

The Mini MBA - case histories

That same value came through strongly in the mini MBA lectures delivered by Professor Anthony Hourihan (RIP – October 2025). He was outstanding in many ways — his sessions were deeply thought-provoking, blending sharp business insight with practical wisdom that stuck with you long after the lecture ended. He had a rare ability to make complex operations concepts come alive through discussion and real-world application.

With that in mind, here are some genuine case histories from my own 30+ years across marine/navigation, consumer electronics, and computers. These aren’t polished success stories — they’re the raw lessons that shaped how I approach technical work, sales, and spares sourcing today.

Marine & Navigation: Where Technical Depth Was Non-Negotiable

In the marine sector, high-end gear demanded serious technical credibility. My rule was clear: you needed at least five years on the engineering floor before moving anywhere near sales or customer-facing roles. This wasn’t bureaucracy — it was survival.

One early example involved the first radar systems that switched from traditional power supplies to switching supplies and commutation circuits for the magnetron. Raytheon produced a beautiful machine that introduced digital circuitry to capture what was then called a “stolen sweep” for the electronic bearing line (EBL). On paper it was advanced. In practice, those early switching supplies brought reliability headaches that pure sales reps would have struggled to explain honestly.

Customers at sea needed someone who could diagnose, explain the trade-offs, and stand behind the solution. A slick pitch without deep knowledge could have led to dangerous failures. The hybrid approach — technical scars plus the ability to communicate clearly — prevented disasters and built lasting trust in a field where mistakes carry real risk.

Much of which we have learnt through the last 100 years has been through the incredible work of the Amateur Radio League worldwide.  The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) was founded on April 6, 1914, by Hiram Percy Maxim to establish a relay network for amateur radio operators to send messages over long distances. It serves as the national association for Amateur Radio in the US.

Consumer Electronics – CRT Era: Simplicity vs Hype

Moving into consumer electronics was a tough shift. The mindset clash between honest technical advice and aggressive sales targets became obvious fast.

In the CRT television days, two brands stood out for very different reasons:

  • National Panasonic was rocket-proof. These sets were extremely reliable. Often the only service needed after years of use was changing one or two filter capacitors. Twenty years of service life was common. Simple, robust design meant lower warranty costs and happy customers who trusted the brand (and the technician who recommended it).
  • Philips receivers were also solid and usually quick to fix — a technician’s friend when time mattered.

Then came the Sony Trinitron. The picture quality was amazing — sharp, vibrant, and superior in many ways. But reliability told a different story. The power supply unit relied on expensive GCS semiconductors. When they failed, you often had to do a full block change to get the PSU working again. Expensive parts and labour made repairs painful compared to the simpler Panasonic approach.

These cases taught me that “best picture” or impressive specs don’t always equal best long-term value. Customers benefited most when someone explained the real service implications honestly instead of chasing the dazzle.

The Computer Industry and Manufacturing Shifts to China

The computer era brought another layer of lessons as global manufacturing changed.

Viewsonic was essentially a marketing company at the time, rebadging monitors. Their entry-level “education series” proved surprisingly reliable. The graphics series were less so, and the top professional monitors — the most expensive — had the most issues initially. Why? They were ex-Panasonic designs, but the Chinese had just taken over the tooling. Early teething problems were inevitable as processes adapted.

The same pattern repeated with other big names:

  • IBM becoming Lenovo
  • Toshiba shifting production
  • Behringer production from Germany to China

This was not abnormal; it was the trend for all major manufacturers to remain competitive.

Early batches after the move often showed quality dips — not because Chinese manufacturing is inherently bad, but because rapid scaling and new tooling bring adjustment periods. Over time, the Chinese engineers and factories consistently found ways to improve and stabilise production. As I’ve seen repeatedly, they adapt fast once the initial challenges are ironed out.

Even in professional audio, Behringer gear delivered great value overall, but the iNuke series had a specific diode batch issue early on. A good technical rep could acknowledge the problem transparently, explain the fix, and still recommend the product where it made sense — rather than bad-mouthing or hiding realities.

These stories tie directly back to the Defy discussion we’ve touched on. When a high-volume local manufacturer like Defy (with major production in Jacobs (Durban) and Ezakheni (Ladysmith) dominates the market, raw complaint numbers will naturally be higher. What matters for decision-making is the failure rate and context — not headline scare tactics.
