Local racing in South Africa

In South Africa (as in most countries) it is very expensive to take a V8, modify it and send it to the track. Sadly, times have changed – as a youth in the 60s, 70s and 80s it was great to spend time at the race-track. In those days sponsorship was in abundance. No longer. We no longer have international events and neither, by the looks of things – in the distant future. In Australia, government made street racing safer by relocating. Here – nothing! Our main track, Kyalami – Johannesburg still holds major national events but I think the administrators must find it tough to make ends meet. It was rumoured that Killarney – Cape Town, may even close down.

Strangely enough East London track still seems to be going strong.

Grand Prix racing would do well here if only local government could see the merit. An attempt to fuel an international event in Cape Town is headed by Igshaan Amlay, a local businessman – website http://www.capetowngrandprixsa.co.za/ What we need now is a support column – I don’t see this. I see a lot of dilly-dally with no solutions. I give Mr. Amlay full support, like thousands of others.
